Mikiki

Your eyes and ears abroad. Mikiki hears the people around you and sees what the camera sees, and tells you what matters, in your own language.

How to use it

Choose the language you speak under I speak and tap Start. The first time, the app explains what it hears and where it is sent, and waits for I understand.
HEAR listens to the people around you and tells you what they said.
LOOK turns on the camera and reads signs, menus and labels for you. Tap the shutter to put a photo in the chat and ask about it, or pick a photo from your library.
TALK on: Mikiki answers in her voice and in text. Off: in text only.
To talk to Mikiki, hold Hold to talk while you speak and let go to send, or type.
SKILLS → TRANS interprets a conversation between you and one other person. Each of you has half of the screen; choose their language under They speak in the account sheet.

Questions

Does Mikiki record people?

It keeps no recordings. While HEAR is on, or while you hold the talk button, the microphone's sound is sent to OpenAI to be turned into text and answered, and that includes the voices of people near you. Use it where listening is OK, and tell people when you translate a conversation with them. See the privacy policy.

Is the conversation saved?

No. The chat and the photos in it live only in the app while the session is open, and are gone when you end it.

How do I know the microphone is open?

The HEAR tile is lit, or the talk button is held, and iOS shows its orange dot at the top of the screen. With HEAR off and the button released, the microphone is closed.

It says Mikiki is busy, or that I have used today's sessions

Mikiki is free, so each iPhone can start a limited number of sessions a day, and there is a limit for everyone together. They come back at 00:00 UTC. A session lasts up to an hour; tap Start again after that.

It says the app could not be verified

Mikiki uses Apple's App Attest to make sure requests come from the real app on a real iPhone. Update iOS, check your connection and try again.

Does it work offline?

No. Hearing, reading and answering run on OpenAI's service, so Mikiki needs an internet connection.

It misheard something, or the translation was wrong

Noisy places make this more likely. Hold the talk button and say it again, or type it. If it keeps happening, write to us with the time and what was said.
